Caitlin Longman is a 25-year-old speech therapist and audiologist from Gauteng. She believes that caring for the elderly is often an under-resourced area of need in South Africa and this is what led her to Park Care where she is offering her services as a 2013 Vodacom Change the World Volunteer.

My Projects:

  • Providing speech therapy and audiology services to our residents. Specific focus was given to stroke care and aphasia (a communication disability post stroke)
  • Aided in the development of the first isiZulu speech therapy app
  • Hearing assessments through the University of the Witwatersrand
  • Training of nurses and caregivers on topics such as stroke, dementia and dysphagia
  • Research on the use of apps & iPads in speech therapy
  • Stroke awareness campaigns
  • Heart & Stroke Foundation, StrokeAid, Headway, Stroke Survivor Foundation & University of the Witwatersrand collaboration for stroke awareness week
  • Asked to sit on the professional board for AphasiaHope
  • Started up SA Aphasia, a group of individuals working on creating free South African appropriate resources for individuals and their families living with aphasia
  • TEDxUCT presentation
  • Nelson Mandela Day
  • Camelot beauty school pampering day for residents
  • Goodies for Gogo project

My Background:

  • Holds a BA degree in speech and hearing therapy & MA in Speech Pathology
  • Worked as the clinical supervisor of 4th year speech therapy students at the University of the Witwatersrand
  • Previously worked as a research assistant at the Health Communication Research Unit, University of the Witwatersrand
  • Worked at Tonga District Hospital in Mpumalanga
  • Her interest and passion lie in offering services to the elderly
