Charity: The Jes Foord Foundation
With the help of the Vodacom Change the World programme, Michelle is able to help restore the lives of women and girls who have been raped.
Smith who is from KwaZulu Natal, is working at the Jes Foord Foundation. She studied psychology and graduated with cum laude and provides trauma counselling to survivors of rape at the foundation.
She set up a counselling department at the foundation, as well as conducting daily counselling with rape survivors. Michelle was instrumental in developing an animated educational cartoon which informs children about sexual abuse.
As part of the 16 Days of Activism they will be hosting two events. Smith will also be working with the Marianridge Multi-Purpose Counselling Centre, which was established to provide counselling services.
It has always been her dream to make a difference in impoverished communities. “When I received the news that I was selected to be a Vodacom Change the World volunteer, I knew that my life was going to change. It is a privilege to be part of the programme and I am making a difference,” she said.
