Charity: Buffelshoek Trust
Alice has a PhD in education, science faculty and has a passion for working with children from disadvantaged backgrounds. She is fascinated with how ICT can complement teachers and learning. She has always wanted to work with education and ICT project at implementation level. Her work over the past 10 years has included understanding the challenges and opportunities associated with ICT infrastructure in rural/peri-urban/urban schools.
This is Alice’s second term on the Change the World programme at the Buffelshoek Trust.
Constituted in July 2001 with the express aim of uplifting the Manyeleti villages; the Buffelshoek Trust set about addressing an essential need of this poverty-stricken, rural community through education. The Trust chose to focus on education for it is a fundamental component of true empowerment.
Alice is consolidating the foundation established over the past year with the 9 schools she has been working with in Acorn Hoek, rural Mpumalanga. She is focused on the creation of a solid and functional ICT support system (internal and external) for school, teachers and learners and admin/governance to encourage sustainable use and also facilitate improved communication, administration and school management. This also include knowledge management and sharing documentation, storage and the dissemination of information.
Alice focuses on the use of relevant ICT applications and programmes (both mobile and fixed) as well as Open Education Resources.
