Charity: Kliptown Youth Program

I’m a 28-year-old chartered accountant. I’ve chosen the Kliptown Youth Programme as my NPO for the 2013 Vodacom Change the World initiative. I have been with the organisation for four years and my personal contribution this year will involve contributing my time and extensive experience in assisting the deserving youngsters of Kliptown with access to further education and entry into the job market. I believe KYP to be perfectly positioned to transfer knowledge to young students via their career centre. I was chosen as a volunteer for my passion and commitment to finding sustainable answers to pressing needs.

My Projects:

  • Career Centre
    - Career guidance
    - Preparation for entry into tertiary education
    - Preparation for entry into the job market
    - Job creation
  • Career Guidance
    - I help run and organise a programme that helps school leavers to fulfil their dreams of studying further
    - Most of the kids who want to study further have used the centre to help them ‘fill the gap’ between school and university
    - The programme helps them to take personality tests and fill in the necessary forms needed for educational institutions
  •  Job Searching
    - Helped to develop a programme that enables school leavers and young adults to acquire skills that will help them to find a job e.g. dressing for success, writing of CVs and  how to conduct yourself in an interview

My Background:

  • Chartered accountant from Gauteng
  • Have been involved with Kliptown Youth Program (KYP) for four years
  • Have been involved with at least ten non-profit organisations (NPOs) including ISeeYou and the Butterfly Foundation - collecting food, blankets and clothing and mentoring young ladies in their career choices
  • Raising awareness in communities of nearby shelters is close to my heart

More about KYP:

  • KYP’s mission is to eradicate the poverty of mind, body, and soul and to fight against the disadvantages imposed on the children of Kliptown, by providing educational support and after school activities
  • It seeks to develop young and dynamic individuals who are willing to contribute effectively for the betterment of their community
  • Tutoring and involvement in athletic and arts programs provide a life to the children of Kliptown not defined  by survival, but by the ability to be active community members, to have dreams and most of all to have hope about the future
