Charity: Thabang Drop-In Centre, Hartswater, Northern Cape
Nathi holds a National Diploma in Sport Management as well as a BTech Degree in Sport Management. He is passionate about sport and has volunteered at many sporting events, including the Vodacom Challenge and ICC Cricket World Cup. He has also worked with disability codes in sport and the South African Gymnastics Federation.
Nathi has been selected for a second term on the Vodacom Change the World programme, working as a Sport Officer at the Thabang Drop In Centre in Hartswater, Northern Cape.
Thabang is serving the rural areas and the surrounding farms, focusing on youth education and health awareness.
They are providing children from the farming communities with basic needs, food and clothing and a better living environment.
The one major problem in the Hartswater is the high unemployment rate, especially among youth. As a result the youth get involved in illegal activities to sustain their lives. Common social problems are lack of recreation or entertainment centres, inadequate social facilities (health, education, and housing), etc. The lack of recreation centres has led to engagement of youth in substance abuse.
In his second year, Nathi will be aiming to:
Improve the living standards of people of Hartswater and marginalized areas of Phokwane through entrepreneurial, educational, skills training and support.
- Inculcate entrepreneurial skills in the youth.
- Establish an ICT Centre in the community that will be of help to matriculants who are unable further their studies due to lack of financial resources.
- Establish career guidance, there are no such activities in this area; hence most youth opt to apply for defence force and work at retail shops.
- Organize workshops that will be a vehicle to address niche social problems, such as drug abuse, homelessness or unemployment.
