Charity: Sabi Sand Pfunanani Trust
Susan holds a B.Ed degree and Honours in Brand Management. She will be working as the Chief Fundraising and Communications Officer at the Sabi Sand Pfunanani Trust.
The Sabi Sand Pfunanani Trust is a community upliftment organisation based in Mpumalanga. They are working in the Bushbuckridge area, one of the poorest areas in the country.
The Trust collaborates with landowners, NGOs and lodges within the Sabi Sand Wildtuin to make a tangible difference in addressing the social challenges in this region.
They are serving a community of over 90,000 people.
Susan knows the area from a very young age. She believes that life is about making a difference and what better than working in some of the poorest villages in the country.
In her considered view, the upliftment of the communities is pertinent to the survival of one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions. With the rhino poaching epidemic the Sabi Sands positive presence in the communities is even more pertinent.
Susan will be implementing the following projects:
- Washable sanitary towel project: The trust has just opened a new High School in one of the villages and is in the process of organising washable sanitary towels for all the girls in the school. She would like to roll this project out in all the schools across all 11 villages.
- Liaison between Trust and Lodge Owners: There is an ongoing problem between the Lodge NPOs and the Sabi Sand Trust. Susan would like to work with the Lodge owners on how best to get them to support the Sabi Sand Trust and ultimately work for a united presence in the villages, so that the villagers are aware that all work done relates back to the reserve itself and ensure that they ultimately protect the reserve.
- Entrepreneurial Project: The trust supports 77 SMEs. Susan would like to secure funding to drive mentorship programme for 3 more years and use the funds to provide capital for the business.
