Charity: St. Joseph's Care and Support Trust in Bronkhorstspruit
Kgabo is a registered nurse and holds a Masters in Development Studies and is studying towards her PhD. This will be her second year on the Vodacom Change the World programme, working as Project Manager at St. Joseph’s Care and Support Trust in Bronkhorstspruit.
St. Joseph’s Care and Support Trust at Sizanani Village is a non-profit organisation based in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Region 7, east of Pretoria. The organisation was formed in 1999 as a response to HIV and AIDS pandemic. It remains the only organisation offering comprehensive holistic Palliative Care services in the region for people with life threatening illness. St Joseph’s is working alongside the South African Government in breaking the cycle of poverty facing many rural communities and has contributed immensely in health and social development, job creation and poverty alleviation. Services are rendered by a team of highly committed, fully trained and experienced staff members.
Kgabo performed a needs assessment among the youth in Bronkhorstspruit. She has been training unemployed youth on entrepreneurship and small business management.
She has managed to get three groups of young entrepreneurs set up their own businesses and is now assisting them with the running of their businesses.
Kgabo also aims to assist youth who have dropped out of school and focus on getting them back into school.
During her second term, Kgabo would like to see the projects replicated in the community to make sure it reaches as many youth as possible in Bronkhorstspruit. She will be focused on the following;
- The first goal is to establish a strong youth development centre at St Joseph that will be manned by well-trained young people.
- The second goal will be to strengthen the back to school campaign making sure that those who rewrite grade 12 pass with good marks.
- The third goal will be to acquire three chicken houses that will be equipped with technology to breed broiler chicken. This has a lot of potential to create employment for many young people especially in the Dark City area of Bronkhorstspruit. Monitoring and coaching are very important for this project to succeed.
